This is one of the biggest wasp nests we’ve seen! The call came in via the builders who were scheduled to remove the tiles and work on the roof but saw wasps going in under the tiles outside and decided to wait – and we bet they’re glad they did!
We think this nest would have been home to several thousand wasps and going into this loft without the appropriate protective clothing would be exceptionally dangerous: when a wasp stings as a deterrent, it gives off a pheromone that highlights the target to the other members of the colony who will then home in and attack. In a confined space with no fast escape route there’s a very good chance of getting stung hundreds of times. Without immediate specialist medical attention this would most likely be terminal.
The nest covered 12 courses of brick, so it’s getting on for a meter high. Impressive.
